The Border Crisis
There is a perpetual fight between us and the germs surrounding us. Although we come equipped with a superb immune system designed to fight germs, often, they have the upper hand and cause severe illnesses and even death. As an adjuvant to our immune system, we have developed antibiotics capable of helping us fight invaders. Many of the antibiotics we have in our arsenal kill germs by attacking their membranes (borders). A bacteria that cannot separate itself from the environment by a secure border will not survive.
It’s fascinating to note that the action of many antibiotics mirrors the necessity of territorial control. Just as these antibiotics render the borders of bacteria or fungi inefficient, the lack of territorial control can lead to the destruction of a country with leaky borders.
Logic dictates that a country’s citizens advocate keeping its borders intact. It is shocking to witness that many members of the Democrat Party, especially the party leaders who should know better, are advocating what is nowadays called an open-border policy.
The absence of control at the border results in many disturbing cases of violence perpetrated on the US population by illegal immigrants who would never be allowed to enter the country legally, considering that some of them have committed heinous crimes in their own country. Returning to the cell membrane analogy, may I remind you that the primary purpose of the cell membrane (the border) is to select what to let in, what to block, what to keep inside, and what to reject?
Years ago, I discussed this issue with a Democrat friend. He found it OK for people to enter the US illegally. He did not understand why we should be concerned about people coming to the US to better their lives. I asked him to estimate how many people illegally cross the border, but he had no clues. When I revealed to him the number, he became speechless. He did not concede his ignorance of the extent of the problem, but I could see in his reaction that he had no idea of the sheer number of people coming from all over the world illegally crossing the border.
In 2021 and 2022, daily encounters by US Border Patrol agents sometimes exceeded 8,000 to 10,000 per day. Most people who come uninvited indeed have good intentions; they are just trying to get a better life, but if only 0.5% are coming to cause havoc, that’s scary. An uncontrolled border is insane. Insanely dangerous.
When we attack bacteria with our invented antibiotics, do you know that many do not just lie down and die? Many bacteria change the composition of their membranes (re-enforce their fences) to resist the assault. Why can’t we be as wise as those tiny, brainless microbes?
In a sense, not letting people flee their lands and pour into the US (except in exceptional cases) would help people worldwide make more effort to realize their own “American dream” at home. But this is a subject to discuss another day. In the meantime, dear Dem friends, do not let single-cell entities be more intelligent than you. Let us keep our border secure. Is it too much to ask?
